Dear Editor, My friend told me about the 3 day diet plan. She told me to stay on it a few days a week and then get off and that I would lose weight jumping on and off this diet. What's your thoughts? I really want to lose weight and keep it off. Does this 3 day diet really work? ~ ~ Chelsea Dear Chelsea, Consider the 3 day diet plan as another fad diet. The problem with the this plan is that it's another version of a starvation diet and starvation diets don't work. You may be able to lose a few pounds on a 3 day diet plan by virtue of starving yourself, but any weight loss will be quickly gained-back. Most people will NOT be able to stay on the 3 day diet for even 1 day because starving is not natural. Your body and appetite will rebel and you'll eat more later in the day, which leads to anger and frustration. You also inadvertently slow your metabolism down by using a 3 day diet plan. The real way to lose weight is to take it one day at a time. Plan your meals, but instead of eating 3 times a day, plan on 5 small meals through the day. Decrease your overall calorie consumption by 25% to 30% and plan on losing about a pound per week. Keep in mind that claims of losing 5 to 6 pounds per week on a 3 day diet are usually not true . The only weight you will lose is the initial water weight, not fat. Anytime you go on a starvation diet, expect to lose a few pounds of water weight. The only way to consistently lose 5 or 6 pounds per week is to NOT eat at all because it takes 3,500 calories to lose 1 pound of fat. To lose weight consistently, you need to add regular exercise. We like to suggest that you ride a stationary bike. The reason is that bike riding burns a lot more calories than most exercise and you can do it everyday in front of the TV watching your favorite program. Ride your stationary bike for 30 minutes each day at 40% of your maximum intensity. The time will past by very fast while you enjoy TV. The combine exercise and
sensible diet
plan will help you lose consistently without feeling deprived, which
leads to eventual weight gain.
