Dear Editor, Every time I try to stay on a healthy diet, I blow it. I can stick to a healthy diet for a few days or even a week but then, I eat something bad like chocolate cake and then I give up. I hate myself when I do this. Am I secretly sabotaging my diet? What are the steps to maintaining a healthy diet anyway? ~~ Jackie Dear Jackie, The reason you're having such a difficult time sticking to a healthy diet plan is that you have an "all or nothing" attitude. Trying to be a perfectionist will only destroy your effort. Allow a day each week to eat foods that aren't on your diet plan. In your case, plan on having a big piece of chocolate cake every Friday .... or what ever day suits you best. Set reasonable goals each day. Make sure that your diet plan allows you to eat 4 to 5 times a day. Include fruits for dessert and never starve yourself to lose weight. If you eat something that's bad, just move on. Don't dwell on your mistake and don't use it as an excuse to continue eating the wrong foods. When losing weight, it's important to keep the "big picture" in mind. Use one day out of the week to eat foods that are forbidden on your regular diet and forgive yourself when you accidentally eat that piece of pie or candy bar. It's important to keep up your
exercise routine. A fast pace walk or stationary bike riding in front of
your favorite television program can burn a lot of extra calories.
