I have to have
that piece of cake ... NOW! Syndrome
The feeling of immediate
gratification will get you in trouble every time. The usual
scenario is when you crave a certain food that you know is
bad for you, and then you eat it and feel guilty for the
rest of the day. Even worse, some people allow themselves
to eat more fatty foods because they feel that they already
broke their diet .... and that they might as
well go all the way and eat more junk food.
This is a form of negative
self talk and is at the core of bad eating habits. People
who are successful losing weight and keeping it off know how
to delay immediate gratification. Instead of saying to
yourself .... I have to have that piece of cake!
Say .... I rather look thin and healthy than eat this
piece of cake.
Think to yourself
what is more important, your goal of losing weight and
looking more attractive or that piece of cake at that
moment. This not to say that you can't ever eat
junk food, it just that you can't afford to impulsively eat
foods that are bad for your waist line. You can always plan
to eat some rich, high calorie dessert in the middle of the
week or during the weekend.
Remind yourself that it will
not be long for your next meal and you can delay eating that
piece of cake. Also remind yourself that you can
stand almost any temptation for a short period of time,
especially the temptation to eat junk food.
It's important to eat 3 meals
a day plus 2 healthy snacks between meals. When you eat
often (low calorie, healthy foods), you won't go hungry
through the day and you will be less tempted to eat foods
that are bad for you. Replacing bad habits with good eating
habits is essential to losing weight and keeping it off.
