Dear Editor, Can you tell me how important carbs, fat and calorie is to losing weight. I try to count my total carbs without worrying about calories. My best friend said I should worry more about the calories. I do know that too much fat in my diet will make losing weight that much harder. What's your advice, carb or calorie? ~ ~ Jo Ann Dear Jo Ann, Counting carbs was very popular due to Dr. Atkins Diet but your friend is right. It's the total calories you consume each day that matter. Calorie is a unit of energy that the body burns. Think of your body as a machine that needs energy every day. If your body gets more energy than it can use, it has to store it some where for later use, better known as fat. Calorie consumption is very important for weight management. The trick is to make calorie intake fun. Never starve yourself to lose weight. Eat 4 to 6 meals each day and try to eat every 2 to 3 hours. The average women needs about 1800 to 2000 calories per day to maintain her weight. The calorie consumption each day to lose weight is between 1200 and 1500. Fuel your body with good food. All calories are not created equal. Calorie from junk food and refined sugar tend to increase insulin and blood sugar level creating a slower metabolism and more fat storage. Calories from wholesome foods (vegetables, meats, whole grain) tend to aid the body in fat loss. Stick to a diet between 1200 and
1500 calories, and watch the weight come off. Consistency is the key so
keep count of every calorie you consume. Plan your meals each day to
make life easy. Never eat anything that's available. That's a recipe for
disaster.
