Dear Editor, I don’t understand why I can’t lose weight. I don’t eat very much during the day. I usually skip breakfast and drink a meal replacement shake for lunch. The only real meal that I eat is dinner. Why is dieting so hard? Am I missing something? Are there secrets to losing weight that I don’t understand. Please help! ~ Angie Dear Angie, The secrets to losing weight are more obvious than you think. Based on your email, I can see 4 critical mistakes that you are making.
Contrary to popular opinion, skipping breakfast does more harm than good. You are slowing your metabolism because your body needs energy to function properly. Losing weight does not equate to skipping meals especially breakfast. You don’t need to eat a lot for breakfast, just something nutritious like a bowl of cereal with a fruit.
Though you did not say specifically that you eat a big dinner, we know from experience that anyone who is dieting and eats very little early in the day will overeat later in the day. Skipping meals early in the day creates the temptation to binge because of extreme hunger by late afternoon.
The secrets to losing weight are simple. Start by eating mini meals that are 200 to 400 calories each, 4 to 5 times per day. You won’t feel too hungry at the end of the day and you keep your energy and blood sugar balanced, which promotes weight loss.
By cutting calories
25% to 30% you will burn more calories than you take in. Plan your meals
and try to stay within 1200 to 1500 calories per day if you’re female.
Men can add 400 extra calories to this range to lose weight at a rate of
1 to 2 pounds per week.
