I need to lose weight but I’m confused on how many calories to eat. As a woman, I know I need to eat less than my husband. I’m also confused about carbs. How many carbs are appropriate for most women to lose weight? Any help would be most appreciated.

Dear Amy,

Make it easy for yourself and restrict calories rather than carbs.  Everything contains calories, even carbs, and losing weight is “more-or-less” a function of burning more calories than you take in. Reducing carbs may help weight loss because simple carbs tend to inhibit the body’s ability to burn fat.

Most women should stay between 1200 and 1500 calories per day to lose 1 to 2 pounds per week. Eat 4 to 5 small meals between 200 and 300 calories so you evenly spread caloric intake through the day. This will prevent you from becoming too hungry between meals and help burn fat more efficiently.
