Dear Editor, I really need to lose weight quickly and I was thinking about fasting. Is this a good weight loss method. Some of my friends think fasting is great but others seem a little skeptical. Who should I believe? ~ Jennifer Dear Jennifer, Fasting for religious beliefs is fine but fasting should not be used as an excuse to lose weight. When you fast for the purpose of losing weight, you turn a treasured ritual into a starvation diet. Fist of all, you will not lose much fat from fasting. Most of the weight loss will be water. The weight you do lose, if any will be quickly gained back. Your body is designed for survival and it will respond to starvation by lowering it’s metabolism and holding on to it’s fat reserve. Drastic change in calorie intake should be avoided. Instead, reduce your calorie consumption or food portion by one-third. This will avoid shocking your body and facilitate the burning of fat. Increase your exercise if
possible. Just riding a stationary bike for 20 minutes a day is equivalent
to a 15% reduction in calorie intake.
