Emotional Eating Due to Stress

Should you avoid "all you can eat " buffets when dieting? Though many buffets offer a good selection of foods that are healthy, the temptation to gorge is overwhelming.

Diet Tip subscribers indicated that they can't always avoid buffets because of necessary social events such as a co-worker promotion or "going away" lunch party. Also, family members occasionally like going to their favorite "all you can eat" buffet for dinner. Refusing to go because of a diet would just spoil the fun for everyone. So how do you deal with this situation?

          Contrary to Popular Belief

Many "all you can eat" buffets serve foods that are healthy and at a very reasonable price. The difference between eating a well balance meal and stuffing yourself silly is your attitude before walking in the door.

         Pre-Determine Your Meal

Allow yourself 2 servings of vegetables, 1 or 2 servings of meats (not fried), light dessert and a diet soda. Total intake is between 400 and 600 calories. You'll feel satisfied and energetic 20 minutes after your
last bite.

         Sample Breakdown of Meal

1 serving green beans ...............  25 calories
1 serving cooked carrots ........    25 calories
1 serving mashed potatoes and gravy .... 150 calories

Choose 1 meat items from below

2 or 3 pieces of baked cod fish (preferably non breaded) .... 120 - 150 cal

4 ounces of meat loaf  ...... 200 calories

4 - 6 ounces of sliced turkey with gravy ..... 140 - 200 calories

4 ounce of baked ham or large pork chop .......  250 calories

          Dessert - Choose 1

pudding ...... 70 - 100 calories
1/2 cup ice cream ..... 120 calories

Diet Soda .....  0 calories

 Total calories  ....................    400 - 570 calories

         Here's the Secret

It takes 15 to 20 minutes for your stomach to signal your brain that you're satisfied and to stop eating. The problems at buffets is that most people stuff down an additional 7,000 calories during that 20 minute lag. Later, you feel sluggish, sleepy and stuffy because of the excess food. Had you eaten only the suggested foods, you would have felt satisfied and energetic.

The secret is to wait 15 or 20 minutes without eating more than your pre-determined portion. If you finish before everyone else, sip on a diet soda to take your mind off the variety of attractive foods. By the time you walk out the door, your stomach will have signaled your brain that you had enough food. You'll be proud that you enjoyed a good and healthy meal without increasing your waistline in the process.

       Watch Out for the Salad

Lettuce and lots of veggies are high in fiber and low in calories. But the common mistake is to dump 3 or 4 heaping of salad dressing which increases the calorie content by several hundred calories. If you choose salads, use low calorie dressing or vinegar. Another alternative is to use just a small amount of regular salad dressing.
