Dear Editor,
My friend told me if I go on a liquid diet, I could
lose 10 pounds in 3 days. I was very skeptical because it's so hard for
me to lose weight. Is it possible to lose 10 pounds in 3 days.
~~ Jessica
Dear Jessica,
Because 1 pound of fat equals 3,500 calories, you
would have to burn 35,000 extra calories in 3 days to lose 10 pounds.
Exaggerated claims of weight loss are fairy tales for the un-informed.
The real way to lose weight is to burn more calories
than you take in. That's how your body works. When you burn more
calories than you eat, your body burns fat. It's that simple. There is
no magic pill that will suddenly increase your metabolism or melt fat.
Eating 25% less calories per day will put your body
at a calorie deficit and cause you to lose weight. A realistic goal is
to lose 10 pounds in 5 to 10 weeks. By simply reducing your portion size
by one-third, you can cut calories enough to lose 1 to 2 pounds each
week.
To lose weight and keep it off, you should enjoy your
lifestyle and diet. You can enjoy food and lose weight but you need a
good diet plan to make it happen. Write down the foods you plan to eat
each day and place a calorie value by each food item. If you don't know
the calorie value, you can purchase a calorie counter mini-book for 2
dollars at your local supermarket store, usually at the checkout stand.
For females, plan your diet between 1200 and 1400
calories per day. Males should plan between 1700 to 2000 calories to
lose weight. This should help you lose 1 to 2 pounds each week. You can
lose 10 pounds as quickly as 5 weeks. Of course, everybody responds to
diets differently. Some people will lose 10 pounds in 5 weeks and
others will take as long as 10 weeks. But the point is, a good diet plan
is the "real way" to lose weight.
