The "Real" Reason why Diet Supplements Exist
Why are there so many weight loss
supplements on the market claiming easy weight loss? Are these
claims true?
- Lose Weight While
You'll Sleep
- Take brand X before
bedtime, lose 15 pounds in 10 days and eat what you want.
- I lost 19 pounds
in one week
Do these products really work and how do they make them? The
answer can be found in one law. In 1994 a law called the
Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) allowed
manufacture to sell products in the form of herbs or pills
without proving their effectiveness or
safety.
Any product that can be classified as a dietary supplement
escapes the rigorous testing and documentation that other
drugs must go through
before they are sold.
Because herbs are considered a dietary supplement,
manufactures invented a variety of herbal products that could
be sold rather quickly without rigorous testing. With good
marketing, a catchy name and a few testimonials, these
supplements or magic potion as we like to called
them, suddenly seem like the answer to all your prayers.
The list of unproven or dangerous ingredients found in weight
loss supplements are the following:
- HCA (Hydroxycitric acid)
- CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid)
- Chitosan
- Ephedrine (could be dangerous to some)
- Pyruvate
- Cellasene
We've warned readers for years about the
dangerous side effects of ephedrine which can be found in many
popular weight loss products such as Metabolife, Diet Fuel and
AM-300. Ephedrine has been linked to several deaths this past
summer from athletes who used it before their workout.
Ephedrine is the herbal equivalent of speed and unfortunately
a few good athletes this summer, in an attempt to enhance
their endurance, paid with their lives.
So what is the U.S. government doing about this massive scam
to the public? The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulates
truth in advertising and is cracking down on outrageous
advertising claims but many companies are still getting away
with deceptive advertising. Your best defense is to be well
informed.
